Staying with the theme of ensuring a foundation is supported by the pillars of Faith, Family, Fitness, Finance and Fun; March was focused on the importance of Faith in life. We know Faith can be a broad as believing in something higher than ourselves or it can be specific as being a part of a faith community.
A lot is dependent upon our connectivity to our family. Family connections impact our very being. It can be positive or negative, but there is a connection. Where does it all begin? Generationally, we are connected to so many who prayed for us even when we were unknown.
Ancestors who were enslaved by human traffickers had to have dreamed for a better life for their descendants. There is a stage play, "My Grandmother Prayed For Me". They did not know what life would mean for this generation, but they knew it had to be better than being owned as property by another human. How inhumane is this. And now we have a President who wants to celebrate those who fought to keep the enslaved in bondage.
Family was the protecting force to ensure the safety of their children. What we now call "The Talk" was highlighted for young black children by their parents and the community. To stay alive, there were certain things that should not be said, there were mannerisms that could not be had and certain places to not go. Mothers had to live with the fear of their sons being lynched.
Being a family Grio has been fulfilling. Now knowing the names of those ancestors going back 6 generations and learning about their lives has been a blessing. I have hope my descendents will appreciate the stories of those brave men and women. Their survival meant our lives.
Now we are in uncertain times and family is needed now more than ever. Teach your children their history. Teach them of the resilience needed to survive and thrive in this world. Ensure they understand the importance of education. The goal was and will always be two times better to be considered equal.
Remember your ancestors and remember what is needed to ensure your descendants understand the importance of connection.
