I was raised in a Christian household.  There was no other choice for my family.  My parents, grand-parents, great grandparents were all members of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. (AMEC).  My Great-Grand Father Mathew Henderson was the minister of a church in Plant City, Florida, not far from my childhood home.  This connection goes back to the period of reconstruction.  I am not sure what happened prior to the end of the human trafficking of slavery in the south.  But I am aware the Southern Baptist church was founded by and for the support of those human traffickers called slave owners.

Even in that dynamic, my ancestors had faith.  Unwavering faith.  I learned from my maternal grandmother to never question what happens to your tithes.  God is in control.  If the minister used any funds inappropriately, God would handle.  But I must continue to tithe without question.  Her husband was the treasurer of the church.  He kept the church funds in a sock under his mattress.  Lots of coins.  This was in the 1960’s in Leon County.  The church was Centenary AME Church – Miccosukee, FL.  Unfortunately, the church closed during COVID.

Another example of faith and money was my paternal Grandmother.  She was a member of the Pallbearers Association.  They made small periodic contributions to help with burial costs.  And sure enough, at her death, a check was presented to our family.  Like burial insurance.

Which brings me to the next and most important point, only members were buried in the church gravesite in rural areas. I am not sure what happened prior to funeral home chapels.

Faith and financial planning are so intertwined.  According to the publication Wealth With Purpose, there are more than 2300 bible verses on money and 15% of what just said was about money and possessions.  How many of us learned this quote, “Money is the Root of all evil”.  However, Timothy 6:10 says:

“For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.”

Churches do realize funding is needed to achieve the goal of saving souls.  It is not the only way, but it is one of the ways.

Do you tithe?  Do you also give of your talent and your time?  All require planning.  I do believe it is important to give your “first fruits”.  Give your best and God will provide the rest!!

Let’s discuss how you can achieve your faith goals from a financial perspective.
