Watching the Super Bowl half-time show was interesting. I did not understand the words, the symbolism or the intent. I was waiting to be entertained. I thought of previous Super Bowl half-time shows - Prince in the rain, Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Madonna, etc. Those were meant to entertain. The Superbowl was meant to entertain. When we are entertained, we forget our problems as well as the problems in our society. We forget about wars, famine, genocide, sex trafficking, and oligarchs controlling our systems. This is part of staying asleep.
1. Don’t Get distracted
During slavery, Plantation human traffickers and oligarchs understood the importance to allow the enslaved people time to have parties as well as church. They also understood the importance of controlling the messages in the church. Enslaved people were content. It seems according to the young folks the message of Kendrick Lamar's lyrics - this is not a time to be entertained, this is a time to be educated about American history and world circumstances.
This is a time to Stay Awake. Go back and listen to the lyrics of all of Kendrick Lamar's songs. Have faith in what is possible if we wake up to how we have been controlled. Get loud. Get busy.
2. Don’t tell all your business.
Kendrick Lamar used subliminal messages that went way above my head. I am calling them whistles of history and context. Harriet Tubman was able to rescue hundreds of enslaved people without using What’s App, Snap Chat, GroupMe or Group Text. It required communicating on a level not understood by many but understood by those who needed to know. With all the personal security concerns in our government, our normal way of communicating may not be secure. Be careful with whom you share information and how it is shared. But stay prepared and attentive.
3. We are not like them
And we are not supposed to be. This is the time for our young people to step up with our support and guidance. A poet once said: “Your children are not your children”. Kendrick Lamar was speaking to those who understand the lyrical style of Hip Hop. Use this time to learn. Ask questions. Our young people have some things to say. You can help them stay prepared. Discuss the importance of being financially stable. My great-uncle believed in having money in the house. You never know when there is a need to make quick moves in dangerous circumstances. Don’t get complacent and distracted by the next new shiny thing that will cause you to go into debt and remain on the plantation. Make smart money moves for your personal revolution.
